FAQ
Why choose timber restoration or replacement over uPVC alternatives?
While uPVC is often marketed as maintenance-free, it is actually a disposable product; once the seals fail or the plastic discolours, the entire unit usually requires replacement. Timber, specifically high-grade materials like Accoya (which is what we use for new timber windows) offers a significantly longer lifespan (often 60+ years) because it can be repaired, repainted, and maintained indefinitely. Beyond the superior aesthetic for period properties, timber is a carbon-neutral material, provides better breathability for old brickwork, and research shows that original timber features can add significant value to a heritage home compared to plastic alternatives.
Why do you recommend Accoya timber over standard wood?
Accoya is a high-performance modified timber with a 50-year guarantee against rot. It is incredibly stable, meaning your windows won’t swell or stick during wet English winters. While the initial cost is slightly higher than standard timber, its longevity and reduced maintenance often make it a better long-term investment than even uPVC.
Can you save my original stained glass?
Yes. We can clean and “encapsulate” your original stained glass units inside a new double-glazed unit. This preserves the historical artwork of your home while giving you the thermal benefits of modern glazing.
Can I double-glaze sash windows in a Grade II Listed building?
It is often possible, but it requires specific consent from your local planning officer. We specialise in these sensitive upgrades, often utilising “slimline” heritage glass units that maintain the original aesthetic. We can also provide the CAD drawings required for planning applications to help streamline the approval process.
What is the difference between Restoration and Conservation?
Restoration focuses on repairing and bringing existing materials back to their original glory. Conservation usually involves working within specific local planning caveats where properties may not be “Listed” but still require historically sympathetic work to maintain the character of the neighbourhood.
How much warmer will my home be with your double-glazing system?
Our double-glazed units feature “low-e” energy-efficient glass with a U-value of 1.2. When combined with our discreet draught-proofing system, we can improve the thermal efficiency of a window by up to 4.5 times compared to original single glazing.
What paint systems do you use?
For new installations, we use the Teknos industrial coating system, which typically lasts 10–12 years before needing maintenance. For on-site refurbishments, we utilise specialist Zinsser primers to ensure maximum adhesion and protection for older timber frames.
Is the installation process messy and do I need to leave my home?
We use effective dust extraction to minimise disruption. While any joinery work involves some movement, we aim to be as tidy as possible. You do not need to leave your home while we work, and we carry out installations all year round, provided weather conditions are safe.
